This month we’re talking about something that doesn’t always get attention.
Not broken systems.
Not crises or outages.
Just the slow, quiet drift that happens when things are running at 90% instead of 100%.
Because that gap is where time gets lost, frustrations build, and businesses end up working harder than they should.
Alongside that, we’ve got:
- What to look out for with shadow AI and staff workarounds
- What’s changing in Microsoft this month
- A big night out at the Network Group Gala 2026
- Our newest team member
- And a few practical answers to questions we’re hearing a lot

Everything looks fine… until it isn’t
Most IT problems don’t start with a big failure.
They start quietly.
A slightly slower system. A login that takes a few extra seconds. A small issue that keeps coming back but never quite gets sorted.
On their own, they’re easy to brush off.
Together, they’re a warning sign.
Here’s where it usually shows up:
- Staff losing time to small frustrations that nobody talks about
- Recurring issues that get closed on a ticket but never fully fixed
- Systems that “just about” do the job
- No clear picture of what’s actually going on behind the scenes
None of it feels urgent. But it builds.
This is the difference between reactive and proactive IT Support.
Reactive waits for something to break. Proactive looks for the early warning signs and deals with them before they turn into something bigger.
The businesses that feel genuinely in control of their technology aren’t always the ones with the most tools.
They’re the ones with the most clarity.
They know what’s working, what isn’t, and what’s quietly becoming a problem.
If things feel “fine” but not quite right… it’s usually worth a closer look.
The real cost of “it’s fine” IT
If your systems are running at 90%… you might not notice.
But your business feels the difference.
Here’s what that looks like over time:
- Slower response times across the team
- Reduced productivity that’s hard to measure but easy to feel
- Frustrated staff who stop flagging issues because nothing changes
- Missed opportunities because things take longer than they should
It’s not one big issue. It’s the accumulation of small ones.
This is where most businesses underestimate the cost. Because nothing has stopped. But everything is slightly harder than it should be.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s visibility.
Knowing where time is being lost. What issues are repeating. What can be improved.
Once you can see it, you can fix it. And that’s where the real value of good IT Support comes in.
Not just fixing problems. Helping you run smoother, faster, and with less stress.

DID YOU KNOW...
Your employees might be bypassing your security (without realising it)
When people can’t access the tools they need quickly, they don’t stop working.
They find alternatives.
This might mean:
- Uploading files to personal cloud storage
- Using unapproved AI tools
- Sharing data through unsecured apps
This is often called shadow IT (or shadow AI). It doesn’t come from bad intentions. It comes from people trying to do their job efficiently.
The risk? Sensitive business data ends up outside your control.
The fix isn’t to lock everything down. It’s to:
- Provide the right tools
- Set clear expectations
- Make it easy for staff to do things the right way
The National Cyber Security Centre has practical guidance on safe tool usage for businesses if you want a solid starting point.
New to Microsoft
Copilot is becoming part of everyday work
Microsoft continues to build Copilot into tools people already use across Microsoft 365.
What’s changing isn’t just the features. It’s how people are starting to use them.
We’re seeing more businesses using Copilot to:
- Summarise meetings in Teams
- Draft emails in Outlook
- Pull insights from documents in Word
The shift is subtle but important. AI is moving from something people test to something people rely on.
The challenge? Making sure it’s being used safely and consistently across the business.
If your team is using Copilot, it’s worth having a clear policy around it. Not to restrict people, but to give them confidence.
Quick IT Tip: Keyboard Shortcuts You’ll Actually Use
A few lesser-known shortcuts that can quietly save time during a busy week.
Windows
- Windows + Shift + S – Quick screen snip. Select exactly what you want to capture without opening the Snipping Tool.
- Ctrl + Backspace – Delete whole words instead of single letters. Useful when typing emails quickly.
- Windows + V – Open your clipboard history and paste things you copied earlier (needs enabling once in settings).
Mac
- Command + Option + D – Show or hide the Dock for more screen space.
- Command + Control + Q – Immediately lock your Mac when stepping away.
- Command + Shift + 4 – Take a screenshot of a selected area of your screen.
Small things. But over a week, they add up to fewer clicks and less friction.
Technology Update
Small performance improvements that actually matter
Microsoft has been focused on performance across its platforms this month.
Things like faster load times, more stable connections, and smoother background processes.
They don’t always make the headlines.
But they matter. Because small delays, repeated across a team, day after day, quickly turn into lost hours.
That’s why performance is often the first sign something isn’t quite right. And why it’s always worth paying attention to.
What’s Been Happening at Focus
Network Group Gala 2026
This month we attended the Network Group Gala 2026.
We went as finalists for MSP of the Year 2026. We didn’t take home the award.
But we’re proud of the recognition. Being shortlisted alongside strong businesses in the industry means a lot to the team. And being a finalist for this award out of the whole country!
It’s easy to keep your head down and just get on with it. Nights like that are a good reminder to step back and look at how far things have come.
The work we do every day, supporting businesses, keeping things running, being the calm voice when something goes wrong, that’s what got us there.
We’ll be back next year.
Welcome to the team, Nicole
We’ve welcomed Nicole to the team this month as our new Business Development Representative.
Her role is straightforward. Speaking to businesses, understanding how things are currently working for them, and spotting where there might be a better way.
If you get a call from Nicole, it’s not a sales pitch. It’s just a genuine conversation.
FAQs
How do I know if our IT is underperforming?
Look for patterns. Repeated issues, slow systems, or staff frustrations that keep coming up are usually early signs worth investigating.
Should we wait until something breaks before reviewing IT?
No. Most costly problems are preventable with regular monitoring and reviews. By the time something breaks, the cost is already much higher than it needed to be.
What’s the easiest improvement most businesses can make?
Visibility. Understanding what’s actually happening across your systems is the first step to improving them. You can’t fix what you can’t see.
Is shadow AI a real risk for small businesses?
Yes. If staff are using unapproved tools to get things done, sensitive data can end up in places you haven’t approved. The solution is simple: give people the right tools with clear guidance.
